Former Andrew Gillum has been arrested in Alabama after a traffic stop led to the discovery of suspected illegal drugs and drug-related items inside his vehicle.
According to the Daphne Police Department, officers stopped Gillum at approximately 10:45 p.m. on July 2, 2026, while he was driving on U.S. Highway 98 near North Main Street in Daphne. Police said officers observed the vehicle being driven erratically before initiating the stop.
The incident has drawn widespread attention because of Gillum’s high-profile political career, including his tenure as mayor of Tallahassee and his closely contested campaign for Florida governor in 2018.
The criminal case is now moving through Alabama’s legal system.
Search of Vehicle
Police said the investigation intensified after an officer reportedly noticed a glass pipe sitting on the vehicle’s center console.
According to investigators, that observation provided probable cause to conduct a search of the vehicle.
During the search, officers stated they recovered three packages containing approximately three grams of a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Authorities also reported finding several rolled marijuana cigarettes, additional marijuana products and various items they identified as drug paraphernalia.
Among the items listed by investigators were a bong, smoking pipes and cut drinking straws.
The materials recovered during the search form the basis of the criminal charges now filed against Gillum.
As with any criminal case, the allegations remain subject to review and testing through court proceedings.
Charges Filed
Gillum has been charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, classified as a Class D felony under Alabama law.
He also faces misdemeanor charges for second-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Following his arrest, Gillum was initially booked into local custody before being transferred to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office detention facility.
Jail records indicate he was released on July 3 after spending less than 12 hours in custody. His release followed the posting of a combined bond totaling $6,500.
